Fighting around Tokyo has ground to a halt, with the Peacekeepers under General Furuki Toshiko proclaiming victory. This marks the end to major hostilities between forces of the old regime, attempting to enforce the will of the late Emperor, and the Peacekeepers. The Peacekeepers declared their rebellion earlier this year when aid convoys to areas of the nation hardest hit by the German Flu were seized by Regime forces.
Regions loyal to the Peacekeepers are led by President Harukor, who was elected to her post in November of last year. President Harukor is expected to take up residence in Tokyo by the end of the month, when Peacekeeping forces declare the kantei to be safe for occupation.
Although this marks the end to the Regime’s conventional forces, the Peacekeepers have held much of the countryside for several months. The end of hostilities and nominal unification of the nation indicate that Japan’s national quarantine will be ended.

Secretary of State Gushiken Yukina’s office released a statement this morning declaring that the Japanese government has renounced all claims to territories on the Asian mainland, along with several key island territories. Notable territories specified by the State Department include all areas of China and Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines.
While the ceding of claims to Korea had been declared earlier, after a meeting with the Korean Federation, there has been no formal contact between Japan and any of the other nations or territories listed by the State Department. When questioned on this, Secretary Gushiken remarked, “This is a unilateral action. We don’t require that those nations emerge from quarantine to ratify this decision.”

The War Department has, today, released a statement regarding the planned modernization of the Peacekeeping Forces of the Free Republic. The War Department, and Peacekeeper Command, are based in the post-war Tokyo building referred to as the Octagon. Officials from Peacekeeper Command were unwilling to comment on the record, but one officer made a statement on the condition of anonymity: “The program is the child of General Furuki herself. We’re supposed to be ditching the old way of doing things, the way that lost us the war. And this is supposed to be doing that.” General Furuki’s office did not return our calls for confirmation on this statement.
The War Department calculates that the plan will be mostly completed by early 1952, with some elements lasting until 1953.

Officials at the Octagon have confirmed that the Peacekeeping Forces have been mobilized and placed on high alert on the orders of General Furuki. Peacekeeping Ground Forces units have been deployed to Hokkaido, along with detachments from the Peacekeeping Air Forces. When reached for a statement on the movements an official in General Furuki’s office stated that “the deployments are simply part of the Peacekeepers’ ongoing operations to lift the quarantine from all Japanese territories.”
This statement raises concerns that the Peacekeepers intend on launching a strike on the Sakhalin and Kurils islands, which Japan lost control of toward the end of the last war. Though the islands were taken by Soviet Russian forces, radio broadcasts from the quarantine zones indicate that they are currently controlled by local Japanese elements.
