The start of the civil war in earnest began slowly, but the speed at which offensives began and the sheer violence that occurred within a short span surprised foreign onlookers. Within the first few months, the opposing factions each began a series of attacks intent to secure their influence or, in the case of the fascist government, retain whatever tenuous control they had in the first place. Anarcho-capitalist forces and Trotskyite militias clashed with one another near Linz for a battle over the river and city. Monarchist gunmen fought with anarcho-capitalists and Trotskyites in Vienna in skirmishes that lasted for days with the only pauses being to reload and take cover. The government proved almost completely ineffective as it steadily lost ground to the opposing sides with no forces left to defend its territory.

Perhaps confusingly, the monarchist militias in Vienna immediately attacked incoming foreign mercenaries in Vienna, surrounding the airport they came in on and besieging the area with demands to surrender to the "rightful Habsburg heir".

In the west, Aragonese convoys passed by groups of Trotskyite militiamen who stared at the Aragonese as they passed. No harm befell them on their way to their destination, but it was evident they were being watched by somebody at all times.

The first boots to be on the ground of the Vienna operation were to be those of the Legionairres, not necessarily for their diplomatic tact or their skills, but instead as a simple logistics consequence. A fortunate consequence of this was that the airport, now surrounded by poorly-equipped militiamen, was facing off against a heavy armor compliment outgunning and outweighing the enemy forces by a massive amount. The confusing part was that somehow the siege would continue despite this obvious disparity.

Lieutenant 'Neil' was in charge of the initial phases of securing Vienna and working on its infrastructure, with the loose orders to reduce chaos within the city and assist a peaceful transition to the new government. Neil took the work on with earnest, expecting an easy few days to begin operations before the fighting began in earnest and he could retreat to a leisurely life managing logistics, or perhaps organizing different cartridges for the Madagascorp military development division. When he was awoken by a recruit spouting some bullshit about the monarchy, his dreams of a peaceful life fizzled away just the same as his restful sleep.

In the time before he had been awoken, the Legionairres had already deployed their armor and dutifully spread out across the airport, creating temporary defensive positions in the event of a gunfight. Neil was not the best diplomat and would explain that to anyone, but he thanked his stars that he'd at least had the chance to try and negotiate with the militia members before fighting broke out. Initializing the loudspeaker on one of the Legionairre's VABs, Neil stated into the microphone "You are facing a far better equipped force for no benefit but that of a king, little better than the fascists who just threw away countless lives in another pointless war. We are here to restore order, and nothing more. We aren't here to kill any more than those who would prevent lasting peace and stability for Austria. We know that many of you have families waiting for you, and many of you just want to see a restoration of order in your country. If you surrender your arms now, we will assist you in this mission."

At that, Neil awaited a response and disseminated orders to continue fortifying the Legionairre's fighting position, as well as to request a standby order for air support.

The arrival of Aragonese and German forces was announced by rolling rumble of diesel-propelled tracks as the spearhead of modern cavalry crossed through Lochau onto the Austrian coast of lake Constance, the open ground and urban buildup one of the largest area of workable ground for armour in the region. Unmolested by the Trotskyites at the border, the spearhead was set to push all the way to Vaduz, the motorised element securing the space between. Theatre command headquarters and air power would, for the time being, be stationed just a couple hundred kilometers away at the German airbase in Büchel. Ground reconnaissance elements protected the eastern flank of the maneuver while aerial recce ran shifting patrols in the nearby foothills, forwarding any identified enemy positions to friendly artillery.

On the border at Bregenz, light infantry were to cordon off the main roads until the bulk of allied forces had passed before engaging the communists holding the town. Though, that would not occupy the bulk of available troops, who would instead go through the town to set up strong points and softly capture as much area as the Trotskyites could stand to give them. Meanwhile Aragonese special forces swept through rear and front positions, ensuring there wouldn't be any nasty surprises lying in wait behind them and forcing enemy observers to keep moving. Sniper teams held overwatch on the main approaches to the largest concentrations of friendly forces holding the roads, preparing free-fire shooting galleries once they got the green light to engage.

The priority at this stage is to secure a beachhead and longitudinal front from which we can strike into the mountains, and beyond, from. Should resistance be minimal, we'll push as far east as we can go, ideally opening up a secure corridor for Italian forces to enter from the south through the Alps. In the mountains, helicopters of observation, attack, and transport missions as well as well-positioned artillery will be paramount to success, mechanised forces only seeing limited deployment. Deployed fighters are of the older fighter-bombers type and will be focused on close air support missions, ground-based anti-air missiles and artillery being seen as sufficient to see of any air threat that Austrian forces of any faction should be able to muster against us.

Moments before the Italian forces crossed the border, the Austrian government was informed that an Italian peacekeeping mission would be entering and operating in the region. This peacekeeping force was actually the bulk of the Italian army, consisting of the entire first army, the second army sans 5 Cav. Div. , and the third army sans the 134 Arm. Div. The peacekeeping force as a whole was organized into discrete convoys with tanks at the lead of each convoy followed by APCs, then infantry trucks, logistics in the middle, some infantry trucks following that, and trailed up by more APCs, with attack helicopters flying security. There were several such convoys, the ones for the First and Second armies stopped in Innsbruck, while the third continued on to Salzburg. A contingent of fighters and bombers will also be in the area. Standard RoE apply, if they are engaged, they're allowed to return fire.

Furthermore the leaders of all factions currently involved in the conflict are invited to attend a peace conference in Milan, also invited are the members of WEST. The Federation of Korea is also invited to send an observer on behalf of the UN.

The German deployment to Austria mostly consisted of the 8. Panzergrenadier-Division with elements of the 2. Panzer-Division supporting with air support providing general cover and air superiority missions. Close-air support bombers engaged targets of opportunity while also heading to break the siege at the airport - and simultaneously firing on (unidentified to German intelligence) Madagascorp units attempting to break out. In general, Berlin's prerogative was to push straight to Vienna and eliminate identified anarcho-capitalist elements to the detriment of destroying any other known faction.

OOC: German deployments include 2 units of artillery, 2 units of armor, 1 unit of light infantry, 3 units of mechanized, 2 units of motorized, 2 units of fighters and 1 unit of bombers.

Neil stood with an aura of smug confidence, despite his own attempts to not incite a gunfight with the monarchists still staring him down in the seconds since his announcement. He stood calmly waiting for a response, confident in the performance of his men and the power of his cause. Yes. Amazing. We have won and they don't know it yet.

This power trip was interrupted promptly by the sounds of his radioman behind him, yelling into his radio whilst it yelled back with similar ferocity. Neil turned to face the radioman in a state somewhere between anger and terror, and as if on que the radioman turned towards Neil and whisper-shouted an incoherent jumble of words. Seconds later, the man collected himself enough to get across two points inside his word salad: "We are UN now," and "The Germans are coming."

The Legionairres line burst into activity fortifying their fighting position, as the announcement was given over loudspeakers: "German forces are incoming, prepare for imminent combat." MANPADs and Crotale platforms were readied to respond to the air, while IFVs and heavier armor were hulled down in advantageous fighting positions. Loudspeakers in the mercenary line burst out "If you hate fascists, come get a gun before you get dead," with several squads beckoning over militiamen to assist in the defense. Elsewhere, Mirage F1 fighters are scrambled for interception attempts against the bombing runs, while bombers are placed on standby and deployed for direct confrontations between the mercenaries and German army.

With the east fairly well cleared out, a small Aragonese-Italian force will remain while the bulk of our forces push into the west, taking the mountains with light and airborne units before moving into the lower-lying areas with a mechanised offensive. Linking up with UN forces at Vienna is a high priority. Second verse same as the first. Casualties are withdrawn to the homeland.

OOG: Two units of Aragonese motorised infantry are damaged and returning home. 3 units of Aragonese motorised and 2 units light infantry remains in 134.

Aragon is moving the following to 133 from 134:
  • 3 Armour
  • 2 Mechanised
  • 4 Motorised
  • 3 Light
  • 3 Artillery
  • 4 Helicopters
  • 4 Fighters
