"Hm," Karolina said, nodding slightly. "I suppose that's true enough. Well, either way, I'm glad to have met you." She gave another glance over the Chinese vehicle, taking careful note of its suspension. "I look forward to seeing how your... tank... fares in these trials."

Warrant Zheng allowed the American to look over Big Dog's exterior with an almost indulgent patience. All of that stuff was proven technology, nothing which anyone with fifteen minutes and any decent public library couldn't find out themselves. The real secret stuff was in the gun and the engine compartment - which was why Junior Sergeant Jin was still "standing guard" in the fighting compartment, ensuring that nobody would get a close enough look - and that nobody would want to.

No matter how tough this American officer thought she was, Zheng suspected she'd last maybe three seconds, tops, against his driver's "knife murderer with no sense of personal space" act.

"I suspect it'll do fine, ma'am," Warrant Zhou replied casually, pretending not to notice. "The fact that the chopper flew us here without crashing and killing us all means this particular outing's half a success already. I uh-" his eyes narrowed. "I don't suppose we'll be seeing your army's air-transportable scout tank out here any time soon, will we?"

Karolina let no emotion betray her face, except a slight smile. "Perhaps not. Maybe that will change one of these days."

OOC: Lap 1 results.

The Chinese FV107 sets the pace.

Aragon's M60A1 throws a track, leading to a below average time after repair.

Korea's Leopard gets stuck in several dunes, leading to an abysmal time.

The SRA's M65A1 overheats its engine and wastes time restarting it, leading to a mediocre time.

The Romanian T-7 is only a few seconds ahead of Korea's Leopard.

The Soviet Object 172 runs a beautiful lap, just barely out of reach of China's time.

Germany's l.Kpz V sets a good time.

Mexico's Jaguar 1 sets an average time.

India's Varaha tank sets a good time.

Japan's Type 61 sets a good time.

Panama's M48 Patton sets a good time.

Chad's AMX-30 comes within a few seconds of matching China's pace.

France's AMX-30 throws a track, which the crew only half-figures out how to repair before it is fixed. This leads to an abysmal time.

"This is fucking bullshit," Senior Sergeant Liu groused as he looked down the results for the second round. "I hit the damn targets on the first try."

"You fired three round bursts at the targets on every try," Warrant Zheng pointed out, with the infuriatingly calm tone of a parent explaining things to an abnormally ignorant child. "Some of the rounds missed."

"Not my fault the targets didn't stand up to the first hit." the gunner replied petulantly. "They trained us to crack armour with repeated impact. The targets weren't as tough as real armour would be."

The Warrant shrugged. "Well, we can make it up in the next lap. It'll be like the first, only now we get to show off Big Dog's turning radius too."

"It's still bullshit..."

"Do you mind telling me why you hesitated to engage the 1200 meter target?" Sergeant Malillos asked his gunner with the coolness of a murderer.

"I- I'm not used to the stabiliser, sarge," replied the Master Corporal. The fear was palpable.

"Yeah, hitting something that far out while on the move just ain't natural," the loader chimed in, oblivious as always. Even if looks could kill, the glare Gabriel was giving him now still wouldn't put a dent in that man, he's just too damn dense.

Gabriel let out a sigh of resignation. "Then get used to it, fast."

OOC: Belated Lap 3 results. Assume these happened in 1971.

China's Type 60 navigates the course in good time, but suffers penalties to accuracy while engaging simulated targets inside the urban area.

Aragon's M60A1 is hit with a penalty lap after failing to navigate an obstacle correctly, and delays in engaging targets in the urban area cause a horrendous time.

Korea' Leopard makes an average time.

The SRA's M65A1 makes an average time.

The Romanian T-7 performs admirably in the urban area.

The Soviet Object 172 suffers a breakdown and as a result makes a time that is as bad as Aragon's.

Germany's l.Kpz V makes a great time.

Mexico's Jaguar 1 makes an average time.

India's Varaha tank takes a penalty lap due to misses in the urban area with a mediocre time.

Japan's Type 61 makes a good time.

Panama's M48 takes a penalty lap and makes a mediocre time.

Chad's AMX-30 suffers a catastrophic breakdown and is eliminated as it cannot finish the remainder of the course.

France's AMX-30 makes a good time.

Final Standings
  1. Japan
  2. SRA
  3. Germany
  4. Romania
  5. China
  6. Mexico
  7. USSR
  8. India
  9. Korea
  10. Aragon
  11. France
  12. Panama
  13. Chad (DNF)
Japan will host the next Tank Biathlon. If it is unable or unwilling to, the SRA will host next followed by Germany.
