By the end of March, the final goal of Operation National Glory seemed on the cusp of fruition. If losses had been heavy, that was to have been expected: the PLA and the Soviet Army were formidable opponents. The effusion of blood was necessary, a final payment to end the protracted, violent period of China's history which now seemed at last nearing a close.

If another ten thousand, hundred thousand, five hundred thousand had to die to secure that end, then that was nothing more than a final drop in the bucket. After the millions dead at the hands of the Warlords, the Japanese, the Flu, one more bloodletting seemed like nothing.

But it wasn't nothing. As the battered and mauled veterans of the National Revolutionary Army neared their final objectives, a tired, caustic, soldier-made-statesman in Guangzhou made one last appeal to reason - or at least to what was left of it after nearly half a century of brutal, fratricidal violence:

The RAPS turned its focus from Beijing’s ruined streets toward the remaining strongholds of the communist forces, running attacks and bombing runs in conjunction with their allies.

A contingent of Pacification Squads was flown in to occupy the remnants of Beijing.

Though losses were mounting and the Fleet Air Arm had taken a battering for the ages, seven squadrons were still ready after damaged units were pulled from the combat roster; they, and the air wings from Barigongju and Samsin joined them, leaving the surface vessels to contain the remainder of the PLAN.

On the ground, elements of the Army were given the order to move, loading onto ships and aircraft to cross into Chinese ports and readying to support the front should the Republic's push falter.

SOLDIERS OF THE REPUBLIC!

This morning, we have received word that the last remnants of the Communist forces have surrendered. We have also received a request from the Soviet high command that their forces be allowed safe passage to the coast, so that they may return home. This request has been accepted.

The long period of civil war, of famine and chaos and massacre which has blighted our country for over half a century is at last over - and it is you, Soldiers of the Republic, who have made such a thing possible.

When speaking of past times, history always records the names of those in power, of emperors and generals and kings and ministers. Yet it is not emperors and generals and kings and ministers who make history. The orders they give are nothing but air if they are not given form by the men and women who labour and fight and die to see them accomplished. In the days of peace and prosperity to come, we who have led must never forget that it was you, Soldiers of the Republic, who made this great and final victory possible; that it was through your sacrifices that China is made whole again.

When the history of this time is written, they will write of you. Of the suffering you have endured, of the courage you have shown, of the friends you have lost. Your monument shall be a unified China, strong and prosperous, and every one who lives within it shall remember what you have accomplished for a hundred generations.
