FEDERAL FUNDING TO GO TOWARDS REBUILDING DETROIT AUTO INDUSTRY

DETROIT, MI - In a new One Year Plan detailed by Congress, federal funds have now been allocated to rebuilding damaged and destroyed factories in Detroit, the eponymous Motor City, in a bid to stimulate the economy and open up further jobs for unemployed Americans. This plan, part of a broader economic plan that seeks to center automobile manufacturing in Detroit, was made in cooperation with the American Automakers Union, with Victorian representatives owing to their joint ownership of Kaiser-Frazer Automotive. It is expected that the rebuilding of Detroit will take the better part of the year, though Congress is hopeful that thousands of new factories will go up.

FRENCH COMMUNISTS DECIMATING "REPUBLICAN" FOES

LYON, FRANCE - French Communists strike at the decadent, crumbling French "Republic!" With the assistance of our Victorian allies, the French Commune has engaged in a total war with the Republicans, annihilating with ease the insidious Republicans, who launched a war they could not possibly win. This paper expect that within the week, French soldiers will be in Atlanta to enjoy an awards ceremony held by President van Baarle to congratulate them on toppling another backwards and corrupt regime!

GENERAL MARKWARDT CALLS DEPLOYMENT OF ARMY TO DAKOTA "INEVITABLE"

NASHVILLE, TN - Speaking from an impromptu press conference after a military parade arranged by General Joseph Markwardt, the commander of the 2nd Field Army said to Alabama Daily News that he fully believed the deployment of the military to Daktoa was "just a matter of time." In his conference, in which he avoided questions about the readiness of American forces and whether the status of Victorian bases in North America would ever be renegotiated, the General spoke at length about upcoming military exercises, centered on a land invasion on the North American continent and how well-prepared the soldiers of his Field Army were for a future operation. In the General's words, "the Socialist Republic Army can destroy any foe and come out on top - if you don't believe me, ask the Romanians what they thought about the Airborne."

AMERICAN ASTRONAUTS IN SPACE - FIRST SUCCESSFUL MANNED SPACEFLIGHT

CAPE CANAVERAL, FL - Rejoice, comrades! American astronaut Alan Shepard today became the first human in space following a successful test flight of the Mercury-Redstone spacecraft. In his 15-minute flight, our brave comrade astronaut was launched into suborbital space to the great excitement and joy of nearly 25 million Americans watching along at home on their televisions. This marks a grand achievement of the space program that President Wood began in 1953. In only nine years, American science is the envy of the world by putting a man in space. Today, low orbit - tomorrow, the moon!

SECRETARY OF TREASURY REPORTING "GOOD ECONOMIC NEWS"

ATLANTA, GA - Following the lifting of tariffs on China and cessation of war in East Asia, Secretary of Treasury Franz Ilbert reports that the economic situation of the Socialist Republics is "improving" as federal funding towards rebuilding Detroit and the split ownership of Kaiser-Frazer Automotive to Victoria pays dividends. Hope is high as confidence in the American dollar improves both at home and abroad, and a Labor Department report shows increased openings in the steel and automotive industry as labor unions in Detroit, Chicago and Peoria show a marked boost in membership. Heading into 1963, the Treasury Department expects even higher results as the GDP grows another 3%.

VP CONNALLY VOWS TO "EXPAND RIGHTS" TO BLACK AMERICANS

ATLANTA, GA - Speaking at a veteran's committee meeting, Vice President Connally has vowed to expand the rights granted to not only black servicemembers, but black Americans across the Socialist Republics. "We have inherited dangerous, outdated laws from newly-joining Republics," he said. "These laws disenfranchise a great number of our comrades, and this cannot stand. We built this union on the idea that all men are created equal, and it is my duty as Vice President and an American to make sure that idea does not die. I will personally make sure that these horrendous, outdated laws are destroyed and replaced by progressive, truly American laws." As of this printing, there are still violent tensions in New York and Detroit between Irish-American mobs, black voters, and black Americans that rage with inter-commune violence. In far too many counties, it is legal to discriminate against an American by the color of their skin in regards to housing, medical treatment, benefits, employment, and personal defense.

MOUNTAINEERS DESTROYED IN BATTLE, LEADERS CAPTURED - MARINE CORPS GENERAL SAYS "THEY'RE DONE"

SPARTANBURG, SC - The last holdouts fall! Fascist brigands that have plagued the American countryside on a corrupt and dismal crusade to build a false America have been demolished in a massive show of strength. The neo-Confederate rebel group known as the Mountaineers have been outright destroyed at Spartanburg, following what many within the Socialist Republic Army and Marine Corps command call a "deliberate ruse" to lull the fascists into a false sense of security and superiority. According to anonymous sources, credibly military intelligence indicated that the Mountaineers were intending to overthrow the Socialist Republics with a massive coup, and had it not been for the intervention of the Marine Corps and Airborne, they likely would have succeeded. Following this total destruction, the Mountaineers have been declared effectively a non-threat to the Socialist Republics.

NEW FILM STANDARDS SET TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN 1963

SAVANNAH, GA - With the prominent rise of American filmmaking as more and more locations and talent becomes available to American filmmakers, Congress has created a new series of guidelines and standards to be met. Various guilds, labor unions, and associations have been created with the full blessing of the American Communist Party to ensure all workers and creators are not unfairly treated when working on new entertainment for the American people, while a new government board, the National Board of Review, has been established. This Board, according to Congress, will decided upon standards and review each film that is to be released, imposing fines and penalties upon filmmakers who do not adhere to their standards or produce "obscene" content unfit for general consumption.

To that end, the National Board of Review has already publicized their three content ratings outside of audience suggestions;
  • Passed, meaning the film can be freely distributed in the Socialist Republics
  • Passed with changes, meaning the film can be distributed once the filmmakers edit scenes deemed obscene
  • Condemned, meaning the film is not appropriate for distribution, and any screening will be met with fines or potential jail time
General audience rankings mostly divide films into age-appropriate categories, with more serious endeavors such as war films, political dramas, and other such films restricted to those 18 and up. The National Board of Review has not clarified what will cause a film to become "Condemned" or if that status can ever be reversed. However, the NBR did state that all foreign films must be reviewed by them prior to any distribution, which may extend itself to serial television productions and cartoons, though the NBR will only grant Passed or Condemned ratings on foreign media.

NEW ERA IN AMERICAN DIPLOMACY! AMERICAN NUCLEAR WEAPON TESTS "SUCCESSFUL"

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS - Socialist Republic Army officials today confirmed that an earthquake reading elsewhere in the nation was not a mistake - the Socialist Republics of America successfully detonated a nuclear weapon this weekend. "We have spent many years working towards this success," said President van Baarle in a press conference. "The American people led the world in building nuclear weapons in the past, and we hope that there will never come a point where the American people will have to use them again. It is my sincere hope that these weapons will remain a curiosity, and nuclear power is used for far more progressive things such as electricity."

President van Baarle has not given any comment.

SAVANNAH, GA - The Department of Defense confirmed rumors from beachgoers and sporting vessels that a Victorian Royal Army Maritime Service submarine surfaced off the coast of the Georgia Socialist Republic. The reasons behind this incident are not known and do not appear to be connected to Socialist Republic Navy exercises in the area. Rumors that the Victorian submarine crew burned a flag are unconfirmed.

SOCIALIST REPUBLICS MILITARY TO ALLOW WOMEN IN FRONT-LINE COMBAT POSITIONS

ATLANTA, GA - In a drawn out debate in Congress, rising casualties and the concerns about the radicalization of young American men has led to a presidential executive order for the military to remove its gender restrictions on front-line combat positions. Previously, women were able to serve as enlisted personnel or officers in non-combat positions in the logistical, medical, financial and maintenance corps, with no weapons training required. As of July 20th, 1963 it has been declared that effective immediately the military will open combat positions to women, as well as allow women to attend senior military colleges. "We expect this to open up our recruitment pool by 200%," said Secretary of Defense Lazare Garver. A revision has been issued to the conscription law which now states that all women between the ages of 18 and 55 are now eligible to be drafted and will face the same penalties as men if they fail to register or deliberately avoid the draft.
