GERMAN FLU UNCOVERED IN NEW YORK - STRICT MEASURES ENACTED

NEW YORK, NY - Long Island in chaos! Sources from the Socialist Republic Army have confirmed that SRA soldiers have had direct contact with the German Flu in Long Island, with no known measures taken by the government of New York to contain it other than sealing off the population. Atlanta has directed a general information campaign to begin in the affected area, while a strict military quarantine is to be enforced by the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, in conjunction with treatment centers and military cleaning procedures. According to anonymous sources, consideration has been given to a more literal procedure, but the details of this are not being discussed publicly and have been classified as a "state secret."

NEW MEASURES ENACTED AGAINST CHINA, FASCIST ROMANIA

ATLANTA, GA - Congress has approved the 1959 Economic Sanctity and Worker's Protection Act, which has increased import tariffs on both nations to 35% total. Further protectionist measures were also enacted to dissuade Chinese and Fascist Romanian products from entering the market, with search and seizure protocols initiated against merchant vessels registered to the corresponding nations. Confidence in the Romanian leu and Chinese Yuan have dropped like a rock in the Socialist Republics, causing currency conversion issues as the government has begun to liquidate its stock of the two currencies in advance of the measures which are to officially be enacted as of March 1st. Further reports indicate all trade has ceased with Fascist Romania, if not already halted by default following unofficial government statements to the effect that Fascist Romania is no longer a recognized nation in the halls of Atlanta.

ROMANIAN CIVIL WAR CONTINUES TO RAGE

ROMANIA - Chaos in the highlands today as Fascist troops engaged and destroyed a Democratic partisan hiding hole, packed to the brim with crates of ammunition - each emblazoned with the Victorian Red Cross symbol. While this paper does not purport to make a claim as to whether Victorian aid workers intentionally or knowingly distributed ammunition to partisans, and rejects the Fascist version of events which implicate Victorian volunteers as aiding their enemy, the situation in Romania is clearly deteriorating. WAR IN CHINA - ROC VS ROZ

HANGZHOU, ROZ - Reports are flooding in that the Republic of Zhejiang, a self-styled Republic on the eastern Chinese coast, is under attack by the Republic of China. The conflict appears to have begun over a recent coup in the Republic of Zhejiang and the intervention of Republic of China military forces in a bid to ensure protection for RoC aid workers. The Republic of Zhejiang claims a direct military intervention violates their sovereignty, a position this paper agrees with. The conflict has reportedly grown with a full Chinese invasion force breaching the border as continued fighting consumes the region.

ATLANTA, GA - Following the declaration of a new Two Year Plan, which by President van Baarle's order will increase economic activity in New York, Washington D.C., and other states of the Socialist Republic, the activity in Stock Exchange rose dramatically which signaled an increased confidence in consumer spending and consumer confidence in the State's enterprises in general. VICTORY OVER ROMANIAN FASCISTS - MARINES AND AIRBORNE DESTROY LAST POCKETS OF FASCIST RESISTANCE

IASI, ROMANIA - Victory over the Fascists! In a brutal battle in the Romanian countryside, our brave defenders of Socialism brought down the sick and twisted ideology that had taken hold in northern Romania. Men from the 1st Marines and 101st Airborne stormed the last holdouts of Horia Sima and his corps of Fascist brigands, dragging the Fascist leader out of his hiding hole. Field photos sent to us directly from embedded combat photographers show the fascist Sima being carried away, bloody and dirt-stained, by strong soldiers of the 101st Airborne. He is currently being held on board the SRN Georgia awaiting trial in Atlanta for crimes against humanity. The Socialist Republic Army has imposed immediate martial law over the occupied zone in northeastern Romania, and according to sources within the Socialist Republic Marine Corps, purging of Fascist influence is expected to begin shortly to be replaced by the ideals of the Socialist Republics of liberty and true freedom.



SECRETARY SHARP, GENERAL CARSON, TO ATTEND ROMANIAN PEACE CONFERENCE

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA - Following the declaration of peace and a general cease-fire between Fascist Romanian forces and the popular front consisting of Korea, Victoria, the SRA, and the legitimate government of Romania, a peace conference has been called to determine the future of Romania and Moldova. Early reports indicate the Romanian government has asked for Horia Sima's fate to be a similarly agreed-upon resolution, though President van Baarle has refused to comment on the matter and has only informed this paper that his status will depend on the "attitudes" of the Romanian government. No clarification has been given by the President's office.

ROCKFORD RAZED AS UNCHECKED CASES OF GERMAN FLU RUN RAMPANT

ROCKFORD, IL - Hours after securing the lost state of Illinois, the Socialist Republic Army, acting under orders from General Joseph Markwardt, burned down Rockford after surrounding it with soldiers, tanks, and artillery to prevent a breakout of the infected population. While speaking to field reporters, General Markwardt defended the move, claiming that the Midwest Republic had failed to do anything to maintain the area, and as a direct result, the people of Rockford had been exposed to countless cases of the German Flu. White phosphorus and firebombs were dropped on the city overnight, with all soldiers of the Army units stationed in the area ordered to without question shoot on sight any individual who attempted to breach the perimeter. President van Baarle said in a press release that although the action was taken without Congressional authority, he approved of the "initiative" that General Markwardt showed regardless.

Rockford is expected to be rebuilt and renamed Atom City, planned to be the center of American nuclear energy production for the future.

DETROIT AUTO INDUSTRY KICKS INTO HIGH GEAR

DETROIT, MI - With the securing of the heart of American motor vehicle manufacturing before the German Flu, the Socialist Republics of America has now fully captured the vital desire of the nation's mind - new automobiles and the industry to build them at a rate hitherto unseen in the world. SECRETARY OF TREASURY REPORTS FIRST SERIOUS SLUMP

ATLANTA, GA - Secretary of Treasury Franz Ilbert, in his late-term report, defined the current economic situation of the Socialist Republics of America as "dismal" with a downturn in economic growth for the first year since the establishment of the Socialist Republics since 1947. The reasons for this are not speculated upon in his report, though economic think tanks and committees have noted that despite the boost in jobs and production output gained in the recent campaign against the Midwest, lack of consumer confidence in the American dollar ($) and growing prices in exchange for goods commonly purchased from Korea and China have led to a downturn in economic activity. Sources within the State Department have not confirmed whether or not this will lead to a reversal, or even outright cancellation, of the 1959 tariffs enacted against China.
