Mexican Civil War

Post by Markus Wilding »

The Emperor of Mexico, Maximilian IV de Habsburgo-Lorena, has officially declared war on the neighboring Sonora Federation. The Sonora Federation, in response, has called upon the international community to condemn blatant Mexican imperialism and assist it in putting a stop to this act of flagrant aggression.

Cascadia has pledged troops to assist.

The afternoon rain of June 8th was disrupted by booming thunder, a signal of a coming storm but also of the might of an Empire at war. The Mexican Empire crossed the border with the Sonora Federation in a blaze of fire and fury, bombarding confirmed enemy positions with artillery and airpower, as Mexican infantry sliced through the deep mountain passes intent on reconquering the North. The Sonora Federation's plea for help was heard far and wide, with most countries offering only minimal support and kind words at the best. Cascadia, however, promised to assist with the full might of their military, intent on checking Mexican progress. The two states had been in a deep naval race for several decades now, each one bidding to outdo the other. Thus far, the Mexican Navy held strong to big gun battleships and heavy missile cruisers, while the Cascadian Navy boasted three carriers and a strong naval aviation tradition.

As Cascadian troops moved to assist the besieged Federation, Sonoran and Mexican ships clashed in the Gulf of Mexico, though the hopelessly outnumbered Sonoran Navy could not do much but hope that they could dent the stronger Mexican ships enough to bloody their noses. Over the entire Sonoran Federation, Mexican bombers flew overhead, casting their shadows as they dropped incendiary bombs on suspected hideouts of Sonoran troops. One such bombing run set an entire village ablaze, a propaganda coup for the Cascadians and Sonorans who claimed the Empire had purposefully targeted the small town.

At sea, the naval war intensified as Cascadian and Mexican ships clashed with one another, while fighting in the Gulf of Mexico was hampered by heavy rains and inaccurate gunnery skills on both sides. By the end of the week, the Cascadian Navy had clearly established dominance in the Pacific, sinking several prized Mexican battlecruisers, but the war in the Gulf of Mexico was far from decided. The hulls of burning and wrecked ships dotted both sides of the Mexican Empire, a sore sight for those who loved their navy dearly.

What was clear, though, was that the Mexican Empire had swept across the Sonora Federation swiftly. The real battle was about to begin between Cascadia and Mexico.

Though establishing a military victory over the Sonoran ground forces, the arrival of the Cascadian Army and its subsequent mauling of Imperial troops, combined with UN sanctioned that quickly muddled the efforts of the Mexican military to secure a quick and fruitful victory proved to be the beginning of a disaster. Thus, a peace offer was sent to Cascadia, offering a return to status quo ante bellum. Mexican forces, though having clearly secured their "rightful provinces" had been soundly beaten in battle, and it was clearly to be a drain on all sides involved unless peace was quickly established. Seattle agreed to the peace terms, maintaining forces in the Sonoran Federation to ensure that the beaten Republic could reestablish itself and prevent the Imperialists from reneging on the agreement to take advantage of Cascadian generosity.

For now, at least, the house of Habsburgo-Lorena's dreams of expansion were shut down.

Nearly eight years after the failed initial expedition, the Mexican Empire again flexed its military muscles to show the world that the House of Habsburgo-Lorena was not a mere laughingstock of the world's royalists. Once again the Sonoran Federation was the target of Mexico's imperial ambitions, but this time Cascadia would not be there to aid the smaller Federation.

In the early morning hours of August 8th, 1973, Mexican Imperial Army units crossed the border and began an immediate and comprehensive campaign to dismantle the Sonoran Federation's defenses. Mexican light infantry led the way into the mountains of the Sonoran Federation as bombers dropped heavy ordnance on confirmed enemy positions and Mexican Air Force fighter jets engaged with their Sonoran counterparts for an outmatched clash in the skies. Out at sea, the Mexican Navy immediately enacted a blockade of the Federation's access to the Gulf of Mexico and actively began hunting down their Sonoran rivals for total control of the sea. On the Pacific side, Mexican submarines warned incoming civilian shipping that there was an active blockade and attempting to run the blockade risked being sunk by the Mexican Navy for "aiding the enemy."

In Mexico City, a swift end to the campaign was hoped for before American or Victorian forces took note of the situation and decided to bring an end to the second such venture in less than a decade.

La Provi amply makes her displeasure with the Emperor's actions clear in the cable sent to his court notifying them of her imminent arrival in the capital, Royal Legion and Air Squadron in tow, for a serious conversation.
