1964 Olympics

Post by Markus Wilding »

The Olympics returned to Asia in 1964, as even with conflict brewing in the world, the Olympic games were something to bring together and unify people, a spot of hope and enjoyment in an otherwise bleak world. The XV Olympiad now featured a proper Winter Games event, with biathlon, bobsleigh, ice hockey, luge, skating of both the figure and speed variety, as well as a smattering of skiing on the table in Korea. Participating nations came quickly, each one declaring their intent to take home the gold - and subsequent chance to host the next Olympics, as bidding already began.

OOC: As before, the Olympics will occur once every four months, with the previous Olympics winner hosting the next one. Each one will alternate seasons (winter-summer). Should a player roll out or stop playing, the player with the next highest amount of medals will host the Olympics. Next Olympics will be Summer.

Seoul in 1964 was a stark contrast to the Seoul of the military government days after the Second World War; towering skyscrapers dominated the skyline, and people and vehicles bustled about the densely-packed city. Crowded markets and shopfronts dotted the city, often a scant few paces from busy streets or tastefully-decorated plazas. Neon hues lit the streets at night, creating a clashing pattern against the minimally-lit residential areas and the floodlights omnipresent across the industrial and port zones.

The opening ceremony was fairly restrained; short athletic and theatrical displays from a number of countries preceded the Olympic anthem, and was followed by the lighting of the Olympic flame, resting on a raised column overlooking the stadium constructed for the event. Various sites around the city had been prepared for the assorted events; and a small village was assembled outside the city proper to house the athletes of the competing nations.

The SRA, as expected, sent at least one athlete to nearly all of the games presented. Only ice hockey was relatively sparse for the incoming SRA athletes, with only a barebones, barely Olympic-level team assembled out of basically every kid from New England and tossed on a plane with little more than a kiss on the cheek and a hearty slap on the shoulder for "good luck." However, the pride of the nation was the SRA's figure skating team, led by Tomislava Milovanovic, first-generation American born to Serbian parents that immigrated to escape the German Flu that rampaged unchecked in Serbia. It was hoped that through her, the SRA's anemic history of Olympic performance could be turned.

At least, that should have been her legacy.

The plane carrying the SRA's Olympic figure skating team crash-landed over Japan, suspected to be mechanical failure. The Japanese and American governments confirmed the grim news just a day after the news of the initial crash broke - there were no survivors. It looked like the SRA's continued abysmal luck at the Olympics would go on for another year at least.

(Oops, went and forgot about this.

SRA gets most golds. Korea gets silver. Mexico wins bronze. Future Olympics will be Winter Olympics in the SRA, unless Korea hosts again. If neither wish to or can host, Mexico will host the Olympics. Can't be bothered to write a fluff post.)
