The current (and first!) president is oil magnate Aisha Zaki, who stepped down from her role as CEO of the powerful AhsaCorp to run for president two years ago. A moderate Republican, Zaki attained national prominence in the advent of the plague by using AhsaCorp's enormous wealth to help eastern Arabia combat the plague and recover from its effects, and by pushing for liberal reforms as the nation reconstituted itself. She ran on a platform of deregulating business, cutting taxes, and emphasizing states' and individuals' rights domestically; her foreign policy platform was centered on expanding Ahsa's oil revenues and fighting communism. She won in a landslide and remains deeply popular.
In Ahsa, Republicans and Democrats are effectively the parties of small and big government, respectively. Republicans, broadly speaking, stand for a limited federal government that intercedes on the laws of states only to defend the rights of the individual; they believe in cutting both taxes and spending (at least until they get to defense spending) to ensure a balanced budget, and vehemently oppose the expansion of government programs into the lives of individuals. Democrats generally believe in robust federal laws to keep businesses on a tight leash, provide things like healthcare and social security, and enforce a moral code rooted in traditionalism. Both have their own factions and internal camps, of course: so-called 'Radical Republicans' are a hair's breadth from calling for the wholesale abolition of the state, and some 'Southern Democrats' have come just short of supporting an Islamic monarchy.
Communism and communist parties are outlawed in Ahsa, and it's one of the few laws both parties can agree on. That sentiment has its roots in the days following the onset of the plague, when communist agitators in eastern Arabia used the plague as a pretext to launch an attempted coup. The result was a civil war that ravaged the country for two years and is widely agreed to have set its recovery back severely. Ever since, the general populace has been deeply distrustful of socialism and communism, and it's pretty easy for a politician to score points by promising to vote to fight communism around the world.
