A message was sent to the Indonesian foreign ministry indicating Vietnamese interest in a trade deal which broadly encompassed reduced tariffs, less restrictive customs procedures and favorable prices on Vietnamese coffee and textiles in exchange for Indonesian petroleum products and steel.

A favourable response came back to Hanoi, mentioning that this may be remembered as the first step toward a flourishing economic relationship with Djakarta, which included hopeful allusions to potential future industrial and financial cooperation and assistance.
